6 ways to avoid loneliness

By Nguyen_Kinh_Luan

Loneliness is a state experienced by everybody, even introverts. There is a difference between being alone and feeling lonely. Being alone; a state of being by oneself, is actually healthy since everyone needs a little time away from others to plan, consider, and simply rest. When you feel lonely, it is an entirely different matter.

It is normal to feel lonely from time to time, but too much loneliness can be unhealthy or even dangerous. Many studies have associated feelings of loneliness and isolation to depression, mental illness, and even physical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and insomnia. You shouldn't allow yourself to feel lonely for prolonged periods of time. Here are things to do when you feel lonely; to make you feel healthier, less painful alone, and more integrated.

1.Join a Club

Join a club that deals in activity you have interest or talents in. Even the smallest town usually has at least some clubs. Maybe you enjoy chess and you would like to play with others to sharpen your skills. You can even consider joining a club dealing in something you've never tried before: wine tasting, pottery, writing, dancing etc. Joining a club is a good way to interact with others and try new things. You can even start your own if your area doesn't have any clubs that interest you. Someone else in the area is likely to share in the interest of your club.

2.Visit a Coffee Shop

These days, coffee shops are lined up everywhere, especially in larger cities. They are a great place to meet people and make contacts. While you sit there sipping your cup of espresso, compliment someone about their laptop, their purse, their tie, their shoes, etc. complimenting someone is a good way to start up a conversation and might just make you a new friend.

3.Try Caring For Others

Caring for others, even when done in small ways will help cure your own loneliness as well as someone else's. Caring for someone makes them feel more connected and useful to you. For example, you can serve as a teen mentor to help pass on knowledge and information to the next generation. It can be practical advice and information such as how to work a polynomial equation. Or giving life lessons like how to get over a broken heart.

4.Figure Out What's Missing In Your Life

When you feel lonely persistently, it may be a warning sign that you're missing something essential in your life. So, figure out what it is that you're missing. You may find that you isolate yourself, intentionally or by design. Or you may be working in a career that doesn't allow for much one-on-one human interaction. Or you don't have loved ones or friends around you can talk to. Take positive steps to correct those and such situations that make you feel lonely. You can join a dating site, obtain contact information of one of your preferred relative or friend you feel close to.

5.Something May be Making You Feel Lonely

Though introverts like their own company, but getting too much of it may make them feel lonely. You may be with someone who makes you feel lonely even when they're right next to you. Or your job, town or living space may be contributing to you feeling lonely.
Be Alert to Verbal and Non-Verbal Cues

Learn to connect and create communication with people by being alert to verbal and non-verbal cues. 90% of all communication is non-verbal; based upon eye contact, facial expression, body language, and unconscious gestures and motions. Look for these cues together with verbal indicators such as tone of voice, word choice, and overall projection to establish communication with someone. Consider people with positive, open body language. They carry themselves with their heads erect and make direct eye contact. When someone smiles to you, it could be an invitation to talk; be ready to smile back and start a conversation.

6.Take a Walk

This advice may seem disingenuous, but taking a walk has been proven to offer many great health benefits both for the body and the mind. Walking allows one to explore their town or area around them in a way a car simply won't. Take a different route than you usually would when taking a walk. Simply pick a direction at random and start to walk.
